In one of the most beautiful places you will ever come across, Pienza in the Val d’Orcia in Southern Tuscany, there are farms that make one of the most heavenly things on earth: cheese. This cheese speaks to you of a place and the people who made it.
Your pecorino cheese tour adventure begins when your personal driver for the day greets you at your place of stay. After a leisurely drive through the beautiful Val d'Orcia, one of Tuscany's most enchanted and unspoilt landscapes of green valleys surrounded by rolling hills and a horizon punctuated by rows of lonely cypress trees, your first stop will be in Pienza.
The area is known for the wonderful Pecorino di Pienza, (it gets its name from the word pecora, Italian for “sheep”, as it is made from sheep’s milk) sheep cheese made exclusively in and around the town of Pienza, which is situated close to the wine producing towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano, home of the Tuscan classic wines.
Pienza is a lovely town with a high artistic value, and with beautiful urban scenery and wonderful views. The main street of Pienza is crowded with tiny craft shops, gourmet cheese and food shops where you can taste many different varieties of cheese. Some are aged in walnut leafs, others are covered in ashes or adorned with grape skins to make "drunk" cheese.
You will then be driven to a gorgeous rustic organic cheese farm that sits on top of a hill overlooking the entire Val d’Orcia and even Pienza itself. Here the cheese producer will be happy to show you how the local pecorino sheep cheese is made and the many stages of aging from soft and fresh to hard and complex.
When it’s time for lunch, you will relax with a glass of local wine, your plate full of cheese and others delicious farm's products surrounded by the Val d'Orcia stunning backdrop.
This tour will be particularly well-suited if combined with the Brunello or Nobile di Montepulciano Wine Tour.
